Museum Exhibits
The exhibitions at the New Italy Museum are managed by a volunteer
curator, currently Mrs. Dot Sawatzki. The heritage items displayed
reflect the lifestyle and contributions of the Italian and community
of New Italy to the North Coast.
The contribution of Dr Florian Volpato to the New Italy Museum
is very evident at the site. Both the internal and external walls
of the museum building are paintings by Dr Volpato depicting scenes
of Italy. Much of the signage that helps create the character
of the complex has also been painted by Dr Volpato, including
the panels that tell the story of the de Ray’s expedition
and the immigrants eventual arrival in Sydney.
Contained in the museum is a wide selection of household memorabilia
from the New Italy settlement and associated rural properties,
but it also contains other memorabilia not linked to the settlement.
Records are held which connect these moveable heritage items to
various donors.
Many items in the museum also provide a tangible link to archeological
places within the New Italy settlement area, such as a desk from
the school and a candle stick from the church. Showcases also
house photographs and pioneer family memorabilia, particularly
textiles such as hand made clothing. The New Italy Museum has
also recently acquired a collection of telephone memorabilia that
has been used on the north Coast of NSW
